The Lantern Project

The Lanterns’ a much needed, modern sanitation facility, the flagship project of ‘Dharmaraja Navodaya’ a curated long term development program for the school was completed in July 2023 and handed over to the school. Lanterns can cater to the sanitary needs of the middle section of the Dharmaraja college which includes over 1200 students and 75 teachers.

The unique restroom design, a model for future developments, is itself expected to stir children’s interest by being educational as well as functional. The design is a brainchild of the architect and an old Rajan Dr Milinda Pathiraja (son of another esteemed old Rajan, the renowned filmmaker Dr Dharmasena Pathiraja) who was constantly involved with all phases of the construction. The project with a cost of approximately 20 million LKR funded by old boys including a generous donation from DAANA as well, was designed to be eco-friendly with water-saving fixtures, energy-efficient lighting, and sustainable materials, highlighting the commitment to environmental responsibility. The labor force contributions were from the Sri Lanka Air Force (under the patronage by the then Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana, an old boy himself) and Professor Udaya Dissanayake from University of Peradeniya, another old Rajan, provided the structural engineering support.
